Righting Feminism
This book talks about conservative women’s organizations, and their opposition to the feminist movement. The Concerned Women for America (CWA) and Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) are the two organizations mentioned, and how they represent the conservative side of the women’s movement. These organizations claim that feminists are clouding women’s judgement and giving them false, overexaggerated data so women follow the more liberal side of the battle for women’s rights. These conservative women’s organizations are still looking to represent women, but they want to enact more restrictive laws, especially concerning topics like abortion, women’s roles as mothers as well as breadwinners, and violence against women.
This book relates to my thesis because it covers the opposing side’s arguments, shedding light on how conservative women feel about all the laws liberal, feminist women want ratified. However, since the conservative women want the rights of women to be limited still, women have rights without the freedom to use them. Women’s rights are being established by feminists, only to then be restricted by conservatives. This back-and-forth concept is an integral part in explaining how women have rights, but because those rights are being limited, they don’t have the freedom to use them.
