Arguments in favor of Abortion
"No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother."
-Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood
This article was about the pro-choice side of women’s rights, and how women should have the right to abortion. Women should be allowed to decide what to do with their bodies, and having the right to abortion is important. The abortion right is also vital for gender equality. By banning abortion, women are forced to go to illegal abortionists, when the right to abortion should be part of pregnancy rights, giving women full control over whether to end their pregnancy. Women are people, not just the carriers of the fetuses, and they have rights too. Women are more affected by abortion rights than men, since abortion rights are a major aspect of women’s rights. Abortion impacts a woman’s life in every aspect, and because it has such an impact, she should have the right to end her pregnancy if she so chooses. If abortion rights are denied, women’s freedom feels constrained, and this is due to other people saying the fetus has a right to life from the moment of conception.
The right to one’s own body is a moral right, and if a woman can’t abort her baby, then this right has been compromised. Women have rights to their bodies, and since the fetuses are inside them, they should have the right to abort the fetus. Roe vs. Wade, under the fourteenth amendment, protects women’s rights to terminate her pregnancy, making the ban of abortion unconstitutional. Pro-life advocates claim the fetus is a separate person with its own right to life, while others oppose the idea that people control their bodies and there are various restrictions on the body. Abortion rights also tie into gender equality, because if the woman isn’t allowed to get an abortion she is expected to raise and take care of the baby. If women have the right to choose whether or not to have kids, then they’re equal to men. Abortion rights give women the same rights and freedoms as men, as well as the rights to their own bodies.
My thesis states that part of the American experience is having rights without the freedom to use them. This article demonstrates how women need their rights, and if those rights are taken away, they will never be equal to men. Right now they have rights with restricted freedoms, but if the right to abortion were to be taken away, they would lose those rights. Without the right to their own bodies, women would lose the freedom to decide whether or not they want an abortion. Men don’t have to carry a fetus for nine months, give birth, and raise the child. Since the woman gets pregnant, she is stuck with the responsibility while the father could leave her if he didn’t want kids. This is how taking away abortion rights would restrain women’s freedoms, taking away their equality to men.
