Respect -Song
The song Respect by Aretha Franklin is an example of women in America asking for their rights. To quote Aretha, “All I'm askin' // Is for a little respect when you come home.” Women aren’t treated fairly, or with the same level of respect as men. In American society, women are seen as below men, and this song illustrates how women want respect and gender equality.
This song relates to my thesis because women don’t have rights, but they want them. Women have rights without the freedom to use them because they are not equal to men on a constitutional level, so by asking for respect, Aretha demonstrates the struggles of women and how they’re treated unfairly. Women don’t have the same rights as men, so they are restricted by the lack of equal rights and therefore don’t have the freedom to use what rights they do have to their full extent.
