Labels Against Women:
Pantene powerfully takes down every Sexist Stereotype about Women in the Workplace
This article/video shows how women in the workforce are treated differently from men. While men may be perceived as the “boss,” women are considered “bossy” for doing the same thing. Men are “persuasive,” while women are “pushy.” The list continues, with more positive connotations used describe men, and negative connotations used to describe women in the workforce. Pantene brought to light the double standard women are expected to meet in the workforce, because gender inequality in the workforce still exists. This is an example of sexism, and there is data that supports both men and women perpetuating sexism. Power and likeability have positive correlations with men, while they have negative correlations with women. Therefore, the more powerful women get, the less they are liked. However, these negative labels are not just impacting women, they are impacting everyone. When women experience discrimination in the workplace, the gender inequality has negative effects on their overall productivity and success. Smart women are more likely to lose a promotion to a less competent man because society doesn’t see women as leaders yet. This advertisement is an example of how there is gender inequality in the workforce, and that sexism needs to be dealt with.
This video relates to my thesis because it shows how women are not equal to men, and how in the workplace their rights are being limited. Part of the American experience is having rights without the freedom to use them. Women have just as much a right as men to have jobs, however, due to sexism in the workplace, those freedoms are being restrained. Women are not being treated fairly, what with negative connotations to women in higher positions and unequal promotion opportunities. Women also tend to be paid less for a starting salary than men, yet another example of how women’s rights are being limited and they don’t have freedom of equality in the workplace.
