Gun Control Takes Away Rights
This letter talks about the Second Amendment and how people have the right to own guns. The Second Amendment is what allowed the colonists to arm themselves in the Revolutionary War. They wanted to defend their families and their freedoms, and America was born because the colonists decided their right to freedom was too important to ignore. Americans should people allowed to defend themselves from internal and external forces that threaten the country. Countries like Nazi Germany and North Korea are supposed to be “peoples” governments, but they ended up leaving their citizens defenseless as dictatorships came to pass. There are roughly the same number of guns in the U.S. as there are citizens - about 300 million. The right to own a gun is one of the country’s oldest rights, and if every American wants to own a gun, then they should be able to. Gun ownerships gives citizens the power to lessen the overextending power of the government, and is the what protects people if the government no longer has our best interests at heart. If gun rights are taken away, it’s not long before other rights are taken away, too. Instead of changing gun laws, educate people in order to put a stop to gun violence and protect Americans’ rights.
My thesis states that Americans have rights without the freedom to use them. This letter relates to my thesis because Americans have the right to own guns, but gun control laws are limiting those rights. If gun rights are taken away completely, how long before other rights are taken? More gun control goes against the “right to bare arms” in the Second Amendment, so Americans have the right to own guns, but that right would be limited by further gun control.
