Equal Means Equal
This video is a trailer for a documentary that is supposed to be released this year. It discusses this “war on women,” and how women aren’t being treated fairly. Women are being paid less than men; women are paid $0.77 for what a man does for the same job. paying women less saves companies money, and also provides them with a “cheap labor pool.” Not only are women being paid less, but they also have to pay a billion more a year for health care. Bills don’t recognize that some people are paid less than others, and they don’t receive a discount because they make less money. Over a woman’s lifetime, she will lose $400,000 due to wage discrimination by the time she finishes working. Nowadays, women 4 out of 10 times are the sole provider for a household, yet they make less money than men and are tasking with paying all the same bills and fees and mortgages. There is also the fact that women aren’t even included in the Constitution. In 1982, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was not ratified because it still needed support from 3 more states. Americans have fought for gay rights and African Americans’ rights, yet women still don’t have rights on a federal level. Most people don’t even know what the ERA is, or the fact that women don’t officially have the same rights as men under the Constitution. Many people believe women are protected under the Constitution, but women were left out on purpose when it was originally written. Women need a constitutional amendment, something that can’t be taken away with a majority vote; something that future generations of women will have.
This video connects to my thesis because it is essentially an entire video dedicated to explaining how women have less rights than men and are suffering from gender inequality. Women don’t just have rights without the freedom to use them, they just have no rights, period. On a constitutional level, women are not seen as equal to men, and this limits women's rights from the start. Now women have to deal with lesser pay, unequal job opportunities, and topics like abortion, rape, and vaginal probing among other things that specifically relate to women. Since women don’t have the full extent of their rights to defend themselves on federal level with female-related topics, they are being misrepresented. Women not only have limited rights, but also a lack of rights. Unless the ERA or some other form of gender equality legislation is passed, women will always have limited rights in comparison to men.
